La Palma, with its highest summit, Roque de los Muchachos, at 2,426 meters, is regarded as one of the world's highest islands in terms of surface area. It is a true small continent, encompassing a variety of Macaronesian habitats. La Palma, together with El Hierro, is the Canary Islands' youngest, having lived for 2 million years. The Teneguia volcano last erupted in 1971. Because of La Palma's climate, and particularly because clouds form between 1 and 2 kilometers above sea level, the prominent astronomical observatory Roque de los Muchachos is located on the peak of Roque de los Muchachos. You can take the trail from Roque de Los Muchachos up to Mirador del Espigón del Roque. You will find a superb observation deck overlooking the Parque Nacional Caldera de Taburiente. Caldera de Taburiente Natural Park covers the island’s northern part and encompasses an erosion caldera formed about 4 million years ago. It has evolved into a lush valley with rocks rising up to 2,000 m. This is an Important Bird Area and a complex ecosystem where the Canary Island Pine and many other flora species thrive. If you’re a beginner, you can take the 3.5 km circular trail around the caldera; otherwise, choose one of the numerous trails to go up to the observatory.

La Palma has been designated a Starlight Zone and has a plethora of observatories on the high slopes of Roque de la Muchachos, a stunningly beautiful area reaching high above the clouds. Visiting this area is a must when you’re in La Palma; physics, natural beauty, and the quest for knowledge all work together to create a totally mind-blowing combination. You can get to the observatories by car, but no public transport exists. This is why a car rental in La Palma is highly recommended, so you can drive wherever you want without limitations. The observatories are in the National Park of Taburiente which was formed by several volcanic eruptions and glacial erosion.

La Palma also has about 15 astronomical viewpoints dotted around the island, designated as the ideal spots for stargazing. It also has big noticeboards explaining the night sky and its science. The northern part of La Palma, surrounding Caldera de Taburiente, offers a wealth of natural landmarks: the Ravine of Las Angustias, the Cumbre Vieja ridge, and mountain gorges leading down to the sea. Despite extensive deforestation, the upland portions of La Palma, such as Los Tilos, still maintain much of the evergreen laurel forest. You can get to the information point of Los Tilos and follow the adequate trail according to your preference. The lush canyon and spectacular waterfalls are certainly the highlights of Los Tilos, and there is also a small museum where you can learn more about the laurel forest. The Playa de Puerto Espíndola is a 15-minute drive away from the forest and consists of a black-lava sand beach perfect for swimming and relaxation. With a flexible car rental in La Palma, you can get anywhere you want and get reasonable prices for long-term car hire without hidden fees.

Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast or a dedicated beachgoer, you will find what you are looking for on the small but wonderful island of La Palma. Explore its natural parks and many viewpoints while hiking, be amazed by its impressive volcanic landscapes, or observe the stars from one of its astronomical viewpoints. One of the recommended things to do in La Palma is visit Barlovento and the natural pools of La Fajana, which are not too far away from the old port of Barlovento, Puerto de Talavera. Barlovento is a small picturesque village with few accommodation and dining options, ideal for couples or for those who want to enjoy their stay on La Palma in a tranquil village. For lunch, try El Asador de Campesino for homemade dishes of typical Canarian cuisine. From Barlovento, you can walk or drive to the spectacular natural pools of La Fajana. The crystal-clear ocean water and the rocky cliffs create a stunning scenery. There is plenty of room, safe steps, and even handrails for a secure way down into the pools. The sea pools of La Fajana de Barlovento are a great location for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, or enjoying a meal at one of the two restaurants. You can then drive to Puerto de Talavera, which features a rural atmosphere and impressive geological formations encircling the small port. It was used as a hideaway by smugglers and pirates, and you will notice the small huts built into the rock as a kind of cave, which are now mainly used by fishermen.

Santa Cruz de la Palma Car Rental

Santa Cruz de la Palma is the historic capital of La Palma, situated on its east coast and built along a lava flow from the Caldereta. It is the second most populous city on the island after Los Llanos de Aridane. Renowned for its centuries-old architecture, Avenida Maritima is the city's main street, running along the seafront, and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the city's incredible charm and the warmth of its people. Many museums await you, including the Maritime Museum, which features a reproduction of Christopher Columbus' ship, the Museo Insular, or the El Salvador church, and the impressive Castillo de La Virgen. One of the city's main features is its long maritime tradition, as Santa Cruz de La Palma has the island's most important port, which is also closely linked to the stories of voyages to the Americas. The most emblematic image of Santa Cruz is its iconic wooden balconies, which, painted in colors and filled with flowers, adorn the façade of the picturesque houses on Avenida Marítima. In addition to strolling through its pedestrian historic center and admiring the beach from the promenade, you can visit other points of interest such as Calle Real, the observation deck Barranco del Carmen, or enjoy tapas and beers in La Isla de Goya tapas bar.
